3 lac seats, 4.42 lac pass

No room for 1.5 lac students at higher level

Daud Md Isa

A serious crisis is likely to creep up over the admission of the students, who have passed the HSC, Alim and HSC in Business Manag-ment examinations this year, to higher educational institutions due to shortage of seats in degree colleges, medical colleges and different private and public universities.
Informed sources say, an alarming situation is likely to arise in the premier institutions in cities where many brilliant students are unlikely to get admission due to shortage of seats.
According to the BANBAIS, there are about 3 lac seats for the students in the country's degree colleges, medical colleges and public and private universities.
The number of students who have passed HSC and equivalent examination this year from nine education boards is 4, 42,389 including 20, 136 GPA-5 holders. A total 1, 21,531 students obtained GPA between 4 and 4.88 while 93,268 students between GPA 3.5 and 3.9 while 83, 986 between GPA 3 and 3.5, while 1, 06,111 between GPA 2 and 2.9 and 17, 357 between GPA 1 and 1.9.
Thus the number of successful students this year exceeds the seats by nearly 1, 40,000.
On the other hand, the sources point out, there is another problem relating to admission to the universities in the cities specially Dhaka. Most of the brilliant students who fared well in the examination are interested in getting themselves admitted to the reputed universities in the capital and other cities.
But the number of seats are limited to accommodate them all. So, hundreds of meritorious students including GPA-5 holders are sure to be deprived of the opportunity of admission to the colleges of their choice.
In the capital, there will be a heavy rush of brilliant students from all over the country for admission to reputed universities like Dhaka University, BUET, Dhaka Medical College and Salimullah Medical College.
For this situation, students and their guardians face an uncertain future in respect of admission to premier institutions of higher education.

SSC Result None come out successful from 72 institutions

At least 72 schools, madrasas and vocational institutes across the country could not achieve any success in the SSC and equivalent examinations this year. No student was passed from the institutions.

Of those institutes, 27 are under Bangladesh Madrasa Board, 23 under Bangladesh Technical Education Board and the rest 21 under eight secondary and higher secondary education boards.

However, number of such institutions this year has dropped to 72 from 91 compared to the last year’s performances.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Nurul Islam Naheed told a press briefing at his ministry that stern action must be taken against those institutions, which failed to achieve minimum result.

He said a committee would be formed soon to investigate into the affairs of the institutions and necessary measures would be taken as per its report.

Secondary education results

THE results of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations under ten education boards were published on Tuesday showing a success rate of 70.89 percent, which marks a fall by 1.29 percent from that of last year. 10,58,674 students appeared at this year's examinations out of whom 7,50,538 came out successful. Madrasah Board produced the best results with an 85.85 percent success rate. 2,726 institutions all over the country achieved 100 percent success while no student from 72 institutions could pass the examinations.

Some 2,794 colleges all over the country have a seat capacity for some 4,63,000 students. It appears that a large number of students are likely to be deprived from admission for higher secondary courses this year for shortage of seats. This calls for a fresh thinking about the education system as a whole. Secondary level education should be such that a pass out would have basic knowledge on all subjects relevant to life and jobs available in the country. Higher education does not suit all learners. Those who intend to take up specialised profession like teaching, engineering, medicine or research need to pursue higher studies beyond the secondary and higher secondary levels. Education up to secondary level should therefore be made more life and job-oriented. It should be made complete and uniform with the existing group divisions abolished. Most of the students can take up technical and vocational courses after completing education at this level. About ten lakh students sit for SSC examination regularly. If adequately qualified, they can be more useful for their families and the nation. This will also help ease admission crisis at the colleges.

2726 institutions achieve 100pc success on ssc result

A total of 2,726 institutions including schools, madrasas and technical educational institutions achieved 100 per cent pass rate in the SSC and equivalent examinations increasing the number454 compared to the previous year.

Last year, the number of such kind of institutions was 2,272.

Of those, 107 institutions are from Dhaka, 22 from Rajshahi, 45 from Comilla, 33 from Jessore, 28 from Chittagong, 35 from Barisal, 39 from Sylhet, 34 from Dinajpur while 2,327 are under

Madrasa board and 56 under Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB).

According to statistics of Education Board, the number of schools and madrasas having hundred per cent success was 774 in 2007 and 1,429 in 2006.

Besides, the number of least-performing institutions in SSC, Dakhil and SSC (Vocational) exams has also come down to 72 from previous year's 91.

In Comilla Board, the number of educational institutions having no success is nil.

The number of least performing schools and madrasas was 248 in 2007, 193 in 2006, 424 in 2005 and 548 in 2004.

The number of expelled examinees has also been falling sharply for the last five years.

High and low of SSC results

THE results of the SSC examinations under eight education boards show that the total number of GPA-5 achievers has gone up by around 4,000, compared to last year's, but the overall pass rate has dropped by three percent.

That more students are getting the highest grade is both an indicator of the rise in the number of high performing students as well as that of better performing teachers and schools. That is good news. We congratulate both the high achievers as well as high performing teachers and schools on their successes.

At the same time however we cannot overlook the fact that the pass rate has dropped. So, it is a mixed bag there.

The number of schools with cent per cent pass figure has increased to 2,726 from last year's 2,272. Also, the schools with zero pass has dropped from 91 to 72, so has the number of expelled students. Thus, the general standard has improved, though still falling far short of our expectations.

The education minister has stated that they would look into the schools performing very poorly and are contemplating to take action against them. But what is really important is to make sure that schools across the country are properly equipped in terms of teaching staff and educational aids to cater for increasing demand of secondary education. There is no doubt that the schools in rural areas are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a minimum standard. It is these schools that the education ministry must concentrate on, and work towards providing better-managed schools both in public and private sectors.

Then comes the big question of absorbing the successful students into the higher stream of education. There is an acute shortage of seats in colleges. Nothing can be more tragic than a GPA-5 achiever failing to get admission in a reasonably good college. So, the decision makers have to think in terms of a holistic plan for accommodating the students in the system taking into account the increasing number of students passing the SSC or HSC exams every year. As for now, introduction of two shifts in colleges appears to be the only solution, provided, of course, the standard of teaching is not compromised.

Finally, time has come to introduce terminal education, so that a large number of students can avail themselves of opportunities for vocational training after completing a certain level of education, ensuring thereby that those who failed did not slip into oblivion.

SSC pass rate falls by 3pc

Number of GPA-5 achievers goes up
