70.89pc pass SSC exams : 62,307 obtain GPA-5


The results of the SSC and equivalent examinations 2009 under ten education boards were published yesterday showing success rate at 70.89 percent as against 72.18 percent last year.

A total of 62,307students have scored GPA-5, the highest since the introduction of the international grading system in 2002. 52,500 students got GPA-5 last year.

A total of 10,58,674 students appeared in this year's SSC and equivalent examinations and of them 7,50,538 came out successful. Pass percentage for boys and girls is 73.13 and 68.41 respectively.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Naheed officially announced the results at a press conference at his ministry's office yesterday. He thanked all officials and employees of the education boards for publishing the results in 60 days as per the promise of the ministry.

The number of schools with hundred percent pass records has increased to 2,726 this year to from 2,272 last year while the number of schools with zero pass came down to 71 from 91.

As many as 541 students were expelled this year for adopting unfair means compared to 707 students in 2008, 985 in 2007, 1,291 in 2006, 1,746 in 2005, 3,381 in 2004 and 13,217 in 2003.

Sylhet Board secured top position among the eight education boards with percentage of pass rate of 78.71 and 1,896 students securing GPA-5 while Rajshahi Board got lowest 58.41 percent.

Under the Dhaka Board, about 1,65,570 students passed the exam with 19,086 students securing GPA-5, also highest among the boards. About 64,266 students or 72.77 percent passed the exam from the Comilla Board with 4,202 achieving GPA-5.

Under Rajshahi Board, 66,457 students came out successful with pass percentage being 58.41 and the number of students getting GPA-5 standing at 4,474 .

In Jessore Board 72,271 students or 68.01 percent were successful with GPA-5 achievers being 4,776.

Some 43,132 examinees passed from the Chittagong Board with success rate of 69.61 percent and 4,529 GPA- 5.

Under Barisal Board, 31,826 students came out successful with pass percentage 65.63, while number of GPA-5 achievers is 1,688.

From the Dinajpur Board 64,913 students came out successful with the pass percentage of 63.58 and 5,292 GPA-5 holders.

The Madrasa Board produced better results among the ten boards with a 85.85 percent rate of pass 85.85 percent. About 1,59,444 students came out successful and 16,309 students obtained GPA-5 while the vocational board scored a pass rate of 70.90 percent. Some 53,216 students passed the exam and 64 students got GPA-5.

Like in previous years, schools in urban areas especially in metropolitan cities, dominated the GPA-5 category and hundred percent pass record.

Viqarunnisa Noon School produced highest 887 GPA-5 achievers followed by Ideal School and College with 754 and Monipur High School with 556.

Secretary of Education Ministry Syed Ataur Rahman, Inter Education Boards Chairman Prof Shamsul Haque, Chairmen of nine Education Boards and concerned officials were present on the occasion.
